Funkhouser: Light Rail defeat is not a setback

KC Mayor Mark Funkhouser is discounting Tuesday’s 14 point Light Rail defeat.

The mayor says he expects a different plan, a regional mass transit plan, to go to voters in 2009.

Funkhouser says the defeat proves Kansas Citians don’t want just a starter line.

The measure on the ballot asked for a 3/8th increase in the sales tax. It would have raised more that 800 million dollars. The proposed route would have been 14 miles long, running from Vivion and North Oak to 63rd and Prospect.

The mayor says voters defeated it because it wasn’t big enough take people where they needed to go. He also says the economy was an obstacle.  He also credited opponents with an “excellent campaign strategy.

One of the leaders of that opposition, Mark Tuohey, says the plan was rejected because it was too vague for many. He says he’s surprised that a day after the defeat, the Mayor is talking about another vote on a larger plan.

  1. I think this Mayor is crazy and should resign. So he can stay home with his wife. Kansas City is falling apart at the seams!!!! I have moved here from Minneapolis and we had the same problem with the mayor. When we got a new mayor for both Minneapolis and St. Paul crime went down and the city started to rebuild. Also both Chief of Police are new and they cleaned house on the departments. Mayor just do your job and STOP crying!!!!
