The Missouri Supreme Court will hold a set of oral arguments next week in the battle over the state’s political lines and redistircting.
Missouri’s Congressional districts and legislative distircts are being challenged in court.
one of the lawsuit includes the Congressional distirct of Kansas City Democrat Emanuel Cleaver (Mo-5). Another involves St. louis Congressman Russ carnahan. His district was eleiminated in the redistricting.
The change in the political lines is required after each US census. Missouri is losing a district becuase the state’s population did not grow fast enough compared with other states.
The re-drawn district takes the Mo-5, previoulsy covering just much of Kansas City and Jakcon County, and juts in into western Missouri. The new Mo-5 also includes a portion of Kansas City North. That area had been in the Missouri 6th. A seat now held by Republican Sam Graves.
Graves distirct now stretches across the northern tier of Missouri counties. It is not directly involved in the redistricting challenges.
The State Supreme Court will hold the oral arguments on Thursday January 12.
