Kansas City Firefighters local 42 says it’s conducting its own investigation into the recent insurance wellness scandal that struck City Hall. In December, the US Attorney’s office announced indictments against six Kansas City, Missouri employees and one from Jackson County government.
They were accused of falsely claiming thousand of dollars in gift cards connected with the city’s insurance provider.
The program is part of the city’s Blue Cross Blue Shield ( BCBS) insurance package.
The defendants are accused of claiming they took part in Blue Cross Blue Shield wellness activities and fitness programs. The federal indictment says the participation claims were false.
There are also charges the defendants may have falsley signed up others and took a piece of the action from the rewards the other employees and thier dependnents racked up.
A statement from Firefighter local 42 President Mike Cambiano says, "we are currently in the process of conducting our own investigation of the BCBS".
At the time of the indictment, a statement from the US Attorney’s office said the number of people who may have falsely claimed participation in some of the programs could exceed 100 people, beyond those already facing federal charges.
The statement from Cambiano added, "from our understanding, this is now an internal city matter and may result in future discipline in any city department involved."
Local 42 represents firefighters, paramedics and emergency medical technicians of Kansas City, Missouri and several other government agencies, not of whom are first responders.
Last month, the indictments included charges against Mark Tholen, who was listed as an emergency technician. Other public workers who were indicted included members of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, the Water Dept. and. employee of the information technology unit.
The county worker indicted was a corrections officer.
It is believed that the city and Blue Cross and Blue Shield are pouring over the records of the wellness program to see if any other workers may have falsely claimed rewards they are not for which they are not entitled.
The fear at City Hall is that many more, perhaps hundreds of city employees, maybe be involved.
