Brownback & Kansas File Requests to Mediate School Finance Decision and Stay School Money Decison

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and Attorney General Dereck Schmidt are asking the court to hold off enforcing the latest judgement on state school Financing. The state filed its motions with Kansas Supreme Court Thursday. They are also asking for mediation.
Last month, a three-judge panel ruled the state was not providing enough money for the state’s public school system. It ordered a $442 million increase in basic state aid per pupil.
“I believe we owe it to Kansas taxpayers, parents, teachers and students to examine every available avenue to resolve this dispute to the satisfaction of all involved,” Governor Brownback said in a statement.
The ruling has outraged some Kansas lawmakers. They think the courts are stepping on the legislators authority to draw up the state budget.
Governor Btownback also criticized the decision during his State of the State speech last month.
