FERGUSON • Police said Tuesday that remarks made by Michael Brown’s stepfather, Louis Head, after last week’s grand jury decision are being investigated for possibly inciting a riot.
In a video taken outside Ferguson City Hall the night of Nov. 24, an obviously angry Head is seen repeatedly shouting to people gathered around: “Burn this bitch down!”
It occurred just after the announcement that a St. Louis County grand jury would not indict Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson in the racially charged shooting of Brown, 18. Later that night, more than a score of fires were set in the area, some destroying major businesses.
A St. Louis County police spokesman, Brian Schellman, said Head’s comments would be taken up as part of the department’s broader investigation of the arson and vandalism. He said the results will be turned over to Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch’s office for consideration of charges.
In the video, Head embraces Brown’s mother, Lesley McSpadden, who expresses her own outrage at the decision. She later said in TV interviews that her husband was merely expressing “raw emotion.”
