Housing and Urban Development (HUD)Secretary Julian Castro says his agency will help KCK residents who’s public housing complex is being shut down.About 350 residents of the Rosedale Ridge Apartments learned Wednesday HUD was pulling its support for the complex.
Castro did not visit the complex during a brief visit to Kansas City Thursday.
He says he was briefed by local HUD officials before touring a couple of projects in Kansas City, Missouri.
Castro said it was unfortunate when landlords do not keep up their end of agreements.
At Rosedale Ridge, the owners received direct subsidies from HUD, not from the tenants.
There have been complaints for months about poor maintenance of the comp,ex. Some units did not have basic utilities.
Castro was impressed with a Kansas City, Missouri project where subsidized housing is mixed in with commercial properties.
He also toured the Posada Del Sol High rise for seniors.
Castro says affordable housing for older Americans is the fastest growing demographic in the housing market.
