Kansas Governor Sam Brownback Thursday called President Obama’s plan to accept Syrian refugees, “irrational”
“Outside of a political comment, this is irrational,” Brownback told the Johnson County Republicans monthly meeting.
He noted that he led the US senate Refugee Resettlement Committee at one point.
“I am pro-refugee, I am pro-people—us giving folks a chance. I am not if they’re coming here to kill us,” he said.
Brownback was one of the first governors to object to the US accepting Syrian refugees.
His remarks Tuesday were some of the strongest yet on the subject.
The Govenor also re-stated his opposition to transferring some detainees from the US prison at Guantanamo to the military prison at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.
He told about 100 people he has heard the Obama administration may be rethinking the plan because of its cost.
About 100 detainees remain at the prison.
“You’d have to spend a minimum of $2 billion to retro fit Leavenworth to do what Gitmo does, Brownback said.
