City Reviews after Gunshots at Zoo Tuesday, Next Free Day “On Hold”

The City Manager of Kansas City, Troy Schulte says the next ‘free day’ at the Zoo is “on hold” after Tuesday’s trouble.
The zoo was near capacity at about 4pm Tuesday when gun shots were heard by the main gate, sending people running for cover.
At a news conference Wednesday morning on a unrelated topic, Mayor Sly James says it is a mistake to
link the trouble Tuesday to incidents on the Country Club Plaza where scores of young people gather in the weekends.
“it’s impossible to prevent where idiots show up with guns,” James said.
James said there was no
proof yet the trouble makers at the zoo Tuesday were also the same trouble makers who have shown up on the Plaza in the past.
The Mayor says talks have already started between the Zoo and Park officials and the Kansas City Police.
Earlier this year, Police Chief Darryl Forte said his department was starting a get tough policy towards trouble on the Plaza.
The free days at the zoo are the city’s way of thanking voters in Jackson and Clay Counties for supporting a recent sales tax to fund the zoos.
On free zoo days with nice weather., like Tuesday, the zoo can see some of its biggest crowds.
Many young people were also on their spring breaks from school. Officials think that added to the crowd.
